Windows Server 2003 Modules

Posted by admin Comments (0)

You feel confident enough with the other Windows versions that you are now thinking of tackling Server 2003. The idea can be a little intimidating, but it is not as bad as you think. This is a basic tutorial on the different modules available in Windows Server 2003. Depending on how you are planning on using the server, that will determine the hardware requirements of the machine. Just because this is a “server”, you do not need to spend over $5,000 on the machine. That is a very big misconception. My recommendations for minimum requirements are as follows:

- Motherboard With Onboard Video/Sound/Lan

- 1 GB Of Memory

- P4 3.0 Ghz or Athlon 64 3200+

- 160GB SATA Hard Drive

- DVD-RW

- An External Backup Device (i.e USB Hard Drive or Tape Drive)

Server 2003 loads the same way XP does. Set the bios to boot from the CD/DVD drive, pop the disk in and follow the instructions. Once it is fully installed and loaded you will be taken to the “Manage Your Server” screen. On this screen you can enable and configure the following options:

- File server

- enabled by default. Basically allows folders to be shared from the server

- SharePoint Services

- Creates a web where users can share information

- Print Server

- A printer installed directly to the server will act as a network printer

- Application Server

- Turn you server into a web server as well as FTP host

- Mail Server – Kinda useless unless you have exchange installed

- Terminal Server

- Lets users login directly to the server to run applications

- Remote Access/VPN Server

- Connect to the server remotely via VPN

- Domain Controller (Active Directory)

- Server controls policies for the entire network domain

- DNS Server

- Controls name to IP address resolution

- DHCP Server

- Assignees IP addresses to DHCP clients

- Streaming Media Server

- Streams video content over the web

- WINS Server

- Older name to IP address resolution method.

Whatever your needs are will determine which of these options get enabled and configured. In this article we are going to briefly touch on Terminal Server, Remote Access, Domain Controller w/Active Directory and DNS Server. I will get into further details about all of them in future articles.

Terminal Server: As mentioned earlier Terminal Server allows users to login to the server to run applications installed on the server. Besides enabling Terminal Server you will also need a Terminal License Server. This is where the licenses, to user Terminal Server, are installed. Depending on the amount of licenses you have that will determine how many users can login. Terminal Server and Terminal License Server can both be on one machine. To enable the licensing server go to control panel -> add/remove programs -> add/remove windows components -> select “Terminal Server Licensing” and install.

To login to the server from a workstation you can use Remote Desktop which is built directly into Windows XP and Vista. To find remote desktop click start -> all programs -> accessories -> communications -> remote desktop. When remote desktop appears enter in the server name or IP address to connect.

Remote Access/VPN: Virtual Private Networking gives you the ability to remotely connect to your server and share it resources. The server will assign you an IP address either from its DHCP pool or you can manually enter a range of IP addresses the server will hand out to its remote clients. Once connected the next step will be establishing a connection to the server’s shared resources. To do this click start -> run -> and type in server name orserver IP Address (replace with your server’s name or IP address) if everything is configured correctly your server’s shares will appear.

Domain Controller: Setting your server as a Domain Controller means you can control network policy through your server. If all the workstations are on the server’s domain, through group and/or domain policy you can restrict user’s movements. Control where they are allowed to go and what they are able to change. With the Domain Controller comes the Active Directory. In the Active Directory you can add network/server users, view/configure domain controllers and domain workstations. This is where you assign users their privileges and whether they can login to the server via Terminal Services.

DNS Server: As stated DNS resolves IP addresses to easier to remember names. Lets say your server’s IP address is 192.168.1.2 and its name is PCServer. DNS allows you to search using PCServer instead of remembering 192.168.1.2. Out of all the modules this is the one that is most confusing in setting up properly.

This was a very basic introduction to some of the modules available in Windows Server 2003. In future articles I will be going into further details about each one.

When The Pope Speaks

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Ankara, Turkey – Amidst arising controversy, Pope Benedict charges forward on his visits to Turkey. Details of his visit are highly sensitive because of remarks the Pope made in a speech back in September. In his highly infamous Regensberg Speech, the Pope simply quoted the Fourteenth Century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus as well as quoting the Qu’ran. Infuriated Muslims believe that the Pope was depicting Islam as an irrational people bent toward violence. But, this anger is misplaced and there are stirring reasons as to why.

Pope Benedict has always come across as an intellectual who likes to explore various sides of an issue. But he is also known as hard-knuckled meaning that when he has contentious opinions, he doesn’t hesitate to voice them no matter what other issues may arise from his words. Since becoming Pope last year, he has made quite a mark on the world already. He has addressed gay marriage as not recognized and not valid. He has denounced the ordination of women. And most recently, he has spoken out about the relationship between Islam and Christianity.

The Pope’s purpose of his speech was to discuss the deep philosophical debate between Faith and Reason. In a review of this historical debate, Pope Benedict notes that the discussion honors the “Three Laws,” which are listed as The Old Testament, The New Testament and The Qu’ran. In this discussion, these three laws are authoritative and must each be used as the basis for logic in the debate. Pope Benedict in fact quotes the Qu’ran in 2.256 that, “There is no compulsion in religion…” Religion is not forced on anyone. It is a matter of one’s own choice to follow religion.

The Pope further quotes Emperor Manuel II Paleologus, “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.” This is a quote of an Emperor who lived in the Fourteenth Century, not the words of Pope Benedict delivered on that notorious September 12, 2006 day.

But when the media makes its own spin on the Pope’s words, it leads many people to believe that the Pope spoke out against Muslims. His message was that it is historically believed by those who have studied and followed religious doctrine that a holy war is not justified by God, no matter what religion or law you follow. In quoting the Qu’ran, the Pope makes it clear that Islam does not believe in forcing religion on others and thereby, know that war as a result of religion is not reasonable. How in the world has the media depicted such a speech as offensive to Islam?

Such articles give us some insight as published in New York Times, written by Ian Fisher, “Pope Benedict, in Inflammatory Speech, Assails All: Secularism, Jihad, Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.” In that article Ian Fisher states, “[The Pope] said that violence, embodied in the Muslim idea of jihad, or holy war, is contrary to reason and God’s plan, while the West was so beholden to reason that Islam could not understand it.” An irresponsible remark such as this, with absolutely no truth, leads many readers to believe whatever it was designed to make them believe.

The Pope’s exact speech can be read by anyone on the Catholic World News website, the Vatican website, and even the Zenit organization website as well as plenty of other websites throughout the globe. But, people rarely have time to research things on their own or read through a seven page document that took the Pope over half an hour to deliver. Therefore, the minds of The People are often influenced by the haphazard remarks journalists craft when they are trying to make the news. Stirring drama where it often doesn’t belong, many reporters will intentionally misquote a world figurehead knowing that the illegitimacy of such remarks will go unnoticed.

While the Pope is trying to embrace the world and invite meaningful dialogue between these two major religions, there are reporters within the media who would like to undermine these efforts. Some reporters might be thinking of the next world war as a way to gain notoriety and one day rank up there with the likes of Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite. Maybe, there are actually some journalists in this world who are such drama queens that they froth at the mouth at the chance to stir up some trouble. Whatever the reason, it would be a better world if everyone would do the research on their own whenever they feel deeply offended about the latest issue in the media.

Opening up dialogue and participating in meaningful discussion is touchy but possible. Misinterpreting someone’s meaning is dangerous and as discussions move forward, questioning what you don’t understand is the most appropriate way to reach a greater understanding. Either way, this is and always has been the best way to bridge the gap between our cultures and to fight terrorism. With a greater understanding of each other, we have less of a need to spread hate.

The Onboard Toolbox

Posted by admin Comments (0)

As all boat owners are probably aware, simply owning the boat is the first base goal: Next, if you don’t want the thing to collapse gently around you and finally sink, you have got to keep it in good order. In other words, you have to maintain it. Usually, the end result is that the boat stays safe and keeps going, a bit like your car.

Whilst the word ‘maintenance’ is synonymous with ‘work’ there is usually the hard way to approach it or the easy way. The hard way is to grovel around in the dark, without the proper gear, using a kitchen knife to attempt to undo a screw that has been screwed tight enough to stop the undercarriage dropping off a Jumbo jet! This will not do. We have to be fully prepared for most scenarios and this is where a bloody good logical, sensible, onboard tool kit comes into the picture. I might add here, the emphasis is onboard. Not under any circumstances, to be taken ashore, to double up as gear for fixing the lawnmower or, God forbid, the fridge. This primary ‘piece of equipment’ may save you and your boat at some point in the future so it must always be at arm’s reach, night and day, a friend in need, as it were.

If you were to take any two boats in a marina and do a spot check on their tool kits you may be in for a shock. All owners appear to have differing priorities when it comes to D.I.Y. onboard. Remember too, we learn as we live. If you see something that might save your bacon on a terrible night, buy it and add it to the stash without a second thought.

SOME BASICS (NOT NECESSARILY IN ORDER OF PRIORITY!)

Lighting – A rechargeable torch from someone like ‘Kambrook’ with thousands of candlepower units that can light every corner with stunning brilliance…even in daylight.

More lighting! – A ‘miners lamp’ type of headset torch can leave the hands free even in rough weather for tricky jobs.

Knife – A good sharp knife is a must. It matters not if the blade folds or is open, as long as it can cut well. A device for sharpening the blade is a must, like a Swiss tungsten steel ‘Istor’ for example (To be found in good hardware stores).

Scissors – In fact several different sizes, some throwaway, some good steel, they come in handy for all sorts of things and cut wire in a pinch.

Pliers – I like electrician’s heavy-duty, insulated handles with cutting blades made from good steel. They are expensive but invaluable. A good back up are needle nose pliers at least four inches long.

Screwdrivers – Every one has a screwdriver on board, don’t they? Trouble is, they are always too long, too short, bent and covered in grease or paint. Get a full-boxed set, flat bladed and Philips head and make sure they are at least ‘Stanley’ quality. Some people like reversible bladed types but beware the ‘Taiwan terrors’ that melt on contact with a screw head. Oh oh! Don’t forget a small set of watchmaker’s screwdrivers for those maddenly tiny screws that live in the back of electronic gear.

Hammers – Four different hammers are a priority. A nylon/rubber headed type for inflicting blows without damage, a small ball peen ‘toffee hammer’ type and a pointed ‘ice pick’ or welder’s hammer for rust and scale. The last is a good heavy sensible hammer for serious thumping when required.

Vice Grips – Two pairs, one eight inch, good quality stainless and a small pair of needle nosed type for awkward corners. Don’t be tempted to buy cheapo here, you will always regret the decision later.

Wrenches or adjustable spanners – Two or three types needed here. Cheapos wear quickly and allow play to ruin the holding quality of these tools. Two roughly the same size allow a nut and bolt to be undone. One really large one is handy for unexpected jobs such as loosening a tightening the gland nut on the stern tube or even the prop nut.

Drills – Two types here. One a cordless drill with a charger. Always use a keyless chuck. A drill without a chuck key is about as useless as the Titanic with an outboard motor. Note: If you have a cordless drill that the battery has died on, you can revive it by soldering two wires, positive and negative, onto the two battery terminals inside the drill handle. These wires can incorporate two alligator clips and be attached to a battery and the drill be used anywhere. Ensure the leads are at least a metre long. Finally, a decent set of metal twist drills with at least two spare small size drills should complete the set up for drilling. You can, if room allows, bring a hand drill for emergency use.

Spanners – It always seems like you have never got enough of the things. Ring spanners, metric and imperial, good quality, on a folding roll.

Electrical nylon ties – What a great invention these things are! Ensure you have several sizes from 30 cms to 5 cms long. They are lifesavers for just about every job where things need to be secured either permanently or temporarily. A quick snip with the pliers frees them instantly. I actually invested five bucks on a packet of ‘re-usable’ ones but the ones I bought from Bunnings actually work loose… a great idea, but no cigar this time!

Adhesives – Several types are a must. Super glue tubes, at least two or three. A tube of silicon or similar. Also a tube of 3M 5200 marine glue. I have also found that the two-pack waterproof epoxy all purpose ‘knead it’ by Selleys is superb for all kinds of quick repairs. Especially in wet areas, it will even cure underwater… a must! (Note: They have several in their ‘knead it’ range so make sure you get the one that states AQUA for wet areas).

Tape – Masking tape, electrical, brown parcel tape and self-amalgamating tape for those ‘must be dry’ jobs.

Axe – A good axe for severing ropes, cables and breaking free in an emergency.

Lubricant – A can of grease and a can of moisture displacing lubricant like WD40. Also a small jar of petroleum jelly for such jobs as reluctant ‘O’ rings and hose pipes.

Hose Clamps – A plastic box bull of various size stainless steel hose clamps… as many as you can afford.

Electrical requirements – These can be many and varied but you can’t go wrong with the basics. Good quality electrical connectors and crimping tools pay huge dividends in the long term reliability. A good pair of ’side cutters’ with insulated handles for all size cables is also important for quick and efficient repairs. Red and black electrical cables (different amperages) and the means to solder them is really important, especially if cruising. A small butane or propane soldering torch (refillable) is advisable. Don’t forget heat shrink tubing for waterproof joins and it is really important that an electrical ‘multimeter’ be purchased and a good book on how to identify and fix onboard electrical problems. (Don Casey’s book on boat electrics called ‘Sailboat Electrics Simplified’ published by International Marine – McGraw Hill available from Boatbooks, (Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne would be a good guide). A working knowledge of how to understand and fix basic electrical faults could be the difference between disaster and success on any offshore trip. Also, don’t forget the soldering wire, self fluxing is good for fast, efficient joins.

Today we are lucky to have access to really good cheap 240/12 volt invertors to run your power tools. The usual power tools can be carried onboard but we won’t go into too much detail in this article about what to carry. Number one on my list however, would be an angle grinder/sander.

Hardware – This can vary enormously but should contain some of the following:

· Stainless wood screws (assorted)

· Stainless nuts, bolts and washers (assorted)

· Stainless split pins (assorted)

· Spare small size drills

· Fuses (if applicable)

· Bulbs for lights and torches

· Files, metal and assorted (needle files too)

· Iron or steel wire

· Plastic spring clips (large and small)

· G-clamps (assorted sizes)

Before you start writing…..I know that each and every person may have priorities but I have left to the very end two additions to the above so they may stick in your mind. One is a total must, the other a luxury, but nevertheless, worthy of note.

The absolute must is a set of serious bolt cutters for disengaging fallen rigging along with a good hacksaw and blades.

The luxury item that I love above all is my variable speed, Ryobi and Bosch grinder and sander. I can say they have saved me more time and effort sanding, cutting and repairing boats that I care to think of…..

Your onboard tool kit is more than a convenience, it is a total number one priority to be treated with respect and care. Ask a mate of mine, Kenny, who foolishly balanced his tool kit on the coaming whilst he unlocked a hatch after a break down at sea. After realising what the huge splash was, Kenny drifted for two days until he was discovered by chance. Kenny (whose box of tea bags went down with the tools) ruefully recalls that “Most people don’t realise you can get fifteen cups of tea from a used tea bag”….. Personally, I think he was lucky, very lucky!

Why Use an External Backup System

Posted by admin Comments (0)

When it comes to backing up your data and ensuring it remains safe, you have plenty of options at your disposal. Some options are clearly better than others, and when it comes to the debate about external backups vs. internal backups, for many external wins hands down. Here’s why you should use an external backup system.

Your external backup system can be done with many different devices. CD’s, tape backups, key drives, and online backups are all forms of external backup systems, but tape backups are definitely the most popular external backup especially if your business needs to backup large volumes of data that would otherwise require a lot of storage space. Tapes are relatively small and can be stored offsite with only a small amount of space available.

External backups offer a key element that other backup systems may not, it is off premises, which can be the difference between recovery after a disaster and the end of your business. In a nutshell it can be the difference between survival and failure.

Your tape backup allows you to backup all of your data and then you remove the tape from the tape backup and take the tape off site for storage making it a great option. You get a full backup and you store it safely offsite with little hassle. Off site means that should there be a disaster you will be able to get your company up and running quickly, and when disaster strikes often the company that gets back into business first is the one that succeeds. Research has shown that those that open later are 50% more likely to fail even if they were a successful business prior to the disaster.

When an internal backup is done it is often simply a secondary hard drive that’s installed on to the system. There’s no question that this is simple and convenient, however, should the system crash your data retrieval may be jeopardized and in the event of a disaster that wipes out your business space you won’t have a backup to pickup the pieces and carry on. The same goes for those that store tapes onsite.

An internal backup is usually a secondary hard drive. You can quickly and easily copy your data from your main drive to your internal secondary drive. That means for those small human errors you can quickly retrieve your data.

Tape backups aren’t error proof. They certainly offer you some excellent benefits but when it comes down to reliability tape backups are known for being finicky and they must be run on a compatible machine. In fact many times the machine they are recorded on is the only machine they will run on.

Recently another external option has become available. Online backups give you the convenience of being able to schedule backups that are completely automated service or you can create backups on the fly whenever you need whether it’s a big problem or a small one. Perhaps you are installing some new software and want a backup just before the install. How convenient!

Now that you know why an external backup system is best and what some of your options are, you’re ready to choose.

Sacred Treasures III: Choral Masterworks from Russia

Sacred Treasures III: Choral Masterworks from Russia Review

I am the producer of this CD and also of the first CD in the Sacred Treasures series called “SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks From Russia” as well as “SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers”, “SACRED TREASURES V: From a Russian Cathedral, and “CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit”. In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. Different types of music serve different needs, and in today’s stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world–to “lay aside all earthly cares” (as the text to a Russian “Cherubic Hymn” prescribes) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these compilations, including this one, “SACRED TREASURES III”…

Sacred Treasures III: Choral Masterworks from Russia Overview

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Our Father,” which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant “Blessed Art Thou O Lord” sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. –Karen K. Hugg

Strategies for data backup – Backup to CD

Posted by admin Comments (0)

You're reading this, it means that you probably have a computer. You probably have some important documents and other files on your computer and could do for you lose this disaster. For this reason, you should consider a back-up strategies, such as backup to CD.

Despite the computer as a very demanding, like all electrical components, there is always susceptible to failure of any type, this could mean forever losing maybe a few precious photosare important documents, unless it is deemed safe. There are many ways to do this, and the method, which is something that we discuss in this article, one of the cheapest.

CDs can be taken for a few cents each and CD stores up to 700 MB of data. If you do not have thousands of music files or video files that you need support, this kind may be sufficient for one person. You can have two different types of CD you can use to have a backup, these CD-R and CD-RW. The Advantage of CD-R is that it is less expensive, but with CD-RW for the CD over and over again you can use.

Depending on your needs, the backup on a CD is probably not the best choice, or may be ideal. If 700 MB is too small for your needs, you may need to consider other data backup strategies. For example, the DVDs contain about 5 GB of data, but these are more expensive and if you have an old computer can not have 'optical drive for burning DVDs. For users who are> Backup of large amounts of data to external hard drives are becoming cheaper and can store large amounts of data. The other possibility is then to backup data online is not easily accessible, such as CDs.

Taking into account this fact, the majority of users should see modest CD an ideal way to back up important data. However, not if you have a backup of your data and your hard disk fails, they then need to examine the procedures for data retrieval.

This growth is in line with the campaign –the Philippine government to strengthen this sector, not just locally, but their goal, the most important international investors. The Philippines is one of the front-line decisions with regard to BPO, in particular the account of the call center, the regime has expressed.

TOD and MOD Video Converter – Camcorder Helper

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Mod is a really strange video format, you can find on popular cameras such as JVC, Canon and Panasonic. It 'a dead format. MOD and TOD are informal names of tapeless video formats that have been recorded by video cameras.

We use camera is the beginning of children, party, and anytime we want to remember. They were in a band, recorded on the MOD and TOD format. Then, if we play on our computers as we want, we need to find the tape,Open the tape, and God bless the band, like the time away broken.

The easiest way to backup and play the MOD and TOD video formats converting them to standard video formats. Such as AVI, MPEG, WMV, etc. As the development of video converter can also convert to MP4, iPhone, iPod, Zune was supported.

How do I know, this feature can converter video, but not all video converter can convert the MOD format, and a producer namedAiseesoft produces a video converter MOD. It works completely on this issue. MOD Video Converter helps you convert MOD, TOD for the video formats you can use anywhere.

Ok, let's talk some differences between normal and MOD Video Converter Video Converter. MOD video converter to convert the position MOD and TOD. And something video editing. There is a creator of video and cutter. We cut the video clips you want to connect and how we want. Here we go, the film produced by ourselves.Video Backup is a good habit to break in the case of the missing and the tape or disk. This discussion, we strongly suggest you backup your DVD disc with a DVD ripper and video converter.
